If I was asked to identify the five top medical stalwarts to have graced Indian medicine during the last century, my list would be: Upendranath Brahmachari for his stellar work on Kala-azar which Rustom Jal Vakil for his groundbreaking work on the clinical usage of reserpine M.K.Krishna Menon for his stellar work on the treatment of eclampsia Autar Singh Paintal for his magnificent researches on the nervous system Vulimiri Ramalingaswami for his pioneering researches in the field of nutrition Brahmachari was knighted and nominated for the Nobel on several occasions. I feel that he deserved the Nobel as much as Ronald Ross did for his malarial researched (he won it in 1902 becoming the first Indian born to be bestowed this honor).
