Treatment with second-generation antipsychotics is associated with increased risks of obesity , prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. To determine whether early use of GLP-1 receptor agonists can mitigate this cardiometabolic burden, the effects of adjunctive semaglutide on glycemic control, weight outcomes, and cardiometabolic risk factors were evaluated in a study involving 104 individuals (mean age 35 years) receiving clozapine or olanzapine and exhibiting early glycemic abnormalities.
The study found that semaglutide produced significantly greater improvements than placebo, lowering HbA1c by β0.25% and enabling 43% of participants to reach low-risk HbA1c levels compared with only 3% in the placebo group. Substantial reductions in body weight (β9.2 kg), waist circumference (β7.0 cm), and fat mass (β6.1 kg) were also observed withβ¦
