How frequent is agranulocytosis with carbimazole at 15 mg per day when treating for hyperthyroidism for graves disease. Is it related to the dose or the class effect.I read that its more frequent when given at doses of more than 30 mg per day that too within the first 3 months of therapy. If it occurs ,we stop the drug and offer RA with iodine as choice. But patient not willing to undergo RA ablation. Then surgery is the choice or patient can be tried with propyl thio uracil.I read its incidence is about 0.2% with methimazole and 0.5 % with PTU.But in real clinical scenario whats the picture.
