Acceptable level of arsenic in water is 0.01 mg/L. For India, according to WHO, levels of 0.05 mg/L is acceptable. In India, 239 million people across 153 districts of 21 states are drinking water with unacceptable high arsenic levels and chronic drinking of such water leads to arsenicosis characterized by cancer of skin, bladder, lungs etc., diseases of the skin, blood vessels, diabetes mellitus and hypertension.
