Uttarakhand high court has directed the health secretary to install observer devices in sonography machines in all the private clinics across the state. The decision has been taken to curb the maternal mortality ratio and female foeticide across the state. The devices would be installed within three months. They would record all sonographies conducted at the centre and would also help to clamp down on sex determination tests.

High court has asked the chief secretary of the state to give directions to the diagnostic centres across the state to supply a list of all expecting mothers with their due dates to the concerned chief medical officer (CMO). It has been done with an aim to lower the maternal mortality ratio in Uttarakhand which is 201 per 1,00,000 live births.
