A meta-analysis released on 4th August in sports medicine, on the basis of 20 studies, has endorsed the following pearls of clinical wisdom: "Prolonged sitting increases insulin resistance & PPG". Study type: Meta-analysis (20 of 44 studies used) Scenarios: (a) Group 1: Prolonged uninterrupted sitting (b) Group 2: Prolonged interrupted sitting with regular activity breaks Parameters tested: (a) PPG (b) Insulin (c) TG Key results: Group 2, in comparison to Group 1, had : (a) Lower PPG (d = − 0.36, 95% CI − 0.50 to − 0.21) (b) Lower insulin (d = − 0.37, 95% CI − 0.53 to − 0.20) (c) No change in TG (d = 0.06, 95% CI − 0.15 to 0.26) While the intensity of activity did not correlate well with any of the levels, mild to moderate intensity was better than just standing.
