About 10% of liver transplants are performed in children in India to treat acute liver failure and end-stage liver diseases. Several liver diseases, including jaundice, cirrhosis, hepatitis, Wilson disease, cholestasis, and hepatic encephalopathy, affect children. These diseases are caused by abnormal levels of bilirubin, decreased blood flow, viral infection, genetic disorder, obstruction of bile flow, and the inability of the liver to remove toxins from the blood. If not treated early, these diseases can lead to liver failure.
