Teriparatide, a 34 amino acid, parathyroid hormone, with the intermittent administration has anabolic effects on bone. Clinical studies have recommended the use of teriparatide for the treatment of osteoporosis and for the healing fractures, however, its use in osseous condition of the oral cavity in humans are lacking. In this publication synopsis, the author has evaluated the effect of daily administration of teriparatide in combination with an oral surgical procedure, on periodontal regeneration in men and women with severe periodontal disease.
Periodontitis is a major cause that results in tooth loss which is associated with systemic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, preterm low birth weight, and cardiovascular disease.
