Patients with round lesions in the breasts are often recalled for repeat mammography. There is a need to distinguish cystic fluid from solid tissues. The technique of spectral x-ray imaging may arise as possible method to discriminate cystic from solid lesions. The study published in renowned journal Investigative Radiology has shown promising results. Spectral X-ray is the technique that allows differentiation between given tissue types provided their spectral absorption characteristics differ measurably.
Thus it is thought that this technique can be employed to distinguish between cystic and solid lesions during the mammographic screening.
