Acute pericarditis is an inflammatory condition of the pericardium, the fibrous sac surrounding the heart. It commonly presents with sharp, pleuritic chest pain that improves when sitting forward and may be accompanied by a pericardial friction rub on auscultation. Electrocardiographic changes and inflammatory markers often support the diagnosis. Most cases are viral or idiopathic and respond well to anti-inflammatory therapy.
