Abuse of Thiazide Diuretics in combination with Angiotensin receptor blockers in treating Hypertension- is leading to Calcium loss in urine . This in combination with Vitamin D deficiency (80% of Indians are vitamin D deficient) is leading to severe Osteoporosis, Severe muscle cramps, etc and troubling many patients. Angiotensin receptor blockers are very less potent in controlling stress induced Hypertension (like Surgical stress - pre operative, peri and post operative). We are using Amlodipine+Atenolol combination to combat pre, peri, post operative rises in blood pressure. Bisoprolol, Nebivolol can also be used.
Please stop prescribing Thiazides + Angiotensin receptor blockers, for Long term treatment of Hypertension. This is leading to severe electrolyte abnormalities. We have seen a patient with 6.5 potassium before surgery - on olmesartan + Hydrochlorothiazide. Share your…
