Education and health are two important pillars of development of any community. India has been criticized for not producing enough doctors since long. As per the WHO norms, there must be 1 doctor per 1000 population. Currently, the ratio of doctor to population is around 1: 1600 in India. In recent past, a huge interest in the governments; both central and states, is seen in increasing medical seats by way of increasing the number of medical colleges.

The policy envisages to have one medical college per district. With the current pace of increasing number of medical colleges, India may be able to reach the WHO norms for the availability of doctors soon.
