A multidisciplinary team at Tripura Medical College and Dr. BRAM Teaching Hospital successfully performed a rare life-saving surgery on a two-day-old neonate diagnosed with left-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), a severe congenital anomaly associated with respiratory compromise, pulmonary hypoplasia, and significant neonatal mortality risk. Prenatal imaging at 32 weeks of gestation identified the defect, enabling clinicians to plan specialized neonatal management before delivery.
Following cesarean delivery, the newborn developed respiratory distress and required immediate stabilization in the neonatal intensive care unit. Diagnostic imaging confirmed herniation of abdominal organs - including portions of the stomach, intestine, and spleen - into the thoracic cavity through a diaphragmatic defect, resulting in significant lung compression.
