Fatty liver, or hepatic steatosis, is a clinical condition with a high level of fat build-up in the liver, causing steatohepatitis, fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis, or liver failure in severe cases. Fatty liver is further classified as alcoholic fatty liver or nonalcoholic fatty liver. Diagnosing fatty liver at an early stage can reduce the associated pathophysiology and damage to the liver. Physical examination, imaging techniques, and liver biopsy are useful for diagnosing fatty liver. Currently, lifestyle modifications and the use of antioxidants and vitamins are recommended for managing the symptoms associated with the condition.
