Liver disease is a major global health concern, responsible for 1.26 million deaths from cirrhosis and other chronic liver conditions in 2019, a 13% rise since 1990. Liver cancer alone caused around 830,000 deaths in 2020, accounting for 8.3% of all cancer-related deaths. In India, the burden is especially high, contributing to 18.3% of the world’s liver disease deaths in 2015. Since 1980, deaths due to chronic liver diseases, including cirrhosis and its complications, have been steadily increasing in India, surpassing trends seen in countries like China.

To raise awareness about liver disease and its impact on liver health, the Healthy Livers, Healthy Lives Coalition observes World Liver Day every year on April 19.
