The placenta does not block the passage of several environmental toxicants from the maternal to the fetal circulation, and more than 200 foreign chemicals have been detected in umbilical cord blood. The current article overviews the latest information about the developmental neurotoxicity of industrial chemicals, proposes strategies to counter this pandemic and to prevent the spread of neurological disease and disability in children. The developing human brain is exceptionally sensitive to injury caused by toxic chemicals, and several developmental processes have been shown to be highly vulnerable to chemical toxicity.
