The US FDA has approved the NVX-CoV2705 vaccine for active immunization to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in adults aged 65 and older, as well as in individuals aged 12 to 64 with at least one underlying condition that increases their risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes. NVX-CoV2705 is an adjuvanted vaccine that contains purified, full-length recombinant spike protein. It was developed to target the SARS-CoV-2 JN.1 variant.
Clinical evidence In a clinical trial involving 25,510 patients, NVX-CoV2705 demonstrated a vaccine efficacy of 89.6% in individuals aged 18 and older, 68.0% in those aged 65 and older, and 89.2% in individuals aged 50 to 64 years. Among vaccine recipients, no moderate or severe COVID-19 cases were reported, compared to 12 cases in the placebo group.
