The USFDA has approved pivmecillinam, a penicillin-type antibiotic for treating female adult patients with uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus saprophyticus , and Proteus mirabilis . Clinical evidence The safety and efficacy of pivmecillinam were evaluated in three controlled clinical trials comparing pivmecillinam to a placebo, another oral antibacterial drug, and ibuprofen.

Pivmecillinam achieved a composite response in more patients than in the placebo and ibuprofen groups (Table 1).
