MUMPS is a self-limiting viral disease caused by the enveloped single-stranded linear negative-sense RNA virus, of the rubulavirus genus, and Paramyxovirus family. It is characterized by the swelling of one or both the parotid glands, which are salivary glands present on either side of the face, below the ears.
