The Abu Dhabi Central Morgue will use virtual autopsies to investigate the causes of death to protect its staff against infectious diseases. Virtual autopsies can be used to detect lung tissue damage and evidence of earlier respiratory distress that could indicate COVID-19. This allows examiners to warn the deceased's close friends and family members about them contracting the infection. During a virtual autopsy, a CT scan is performed on the body, which is a cadaver bag.
No physical post mortem is performed. The technology was first implemented in Abu Dhabi in 2020 and has since aided in the investigation of over 700 legal cases.
