Virtual colonoscopy or CT Colonography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to make a three-dimensional image of the interior lining colon and rectum. It is one of many tests to screen for colon cancer. The cross-sectional images can be reformatted in multiple planes,or generate three-dimensional images. These images can be viewed on a computer monitor, printed on film or transferred to a storage device Virtual colonoscopy is not yet widely available. It is still being studied for accuracy of findings visa vis real colonoscopy.
It requires the routine cleansing colon preparation. For CT, air or carbon given through rectal tube, for MRI, a contrast is given through the rectal tube.
