International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a specialized arm of the World Health Organization (WHO) recently posted a shocker of a news for meat lovers. In a recent study published by them in Lancet Oncology, they mentioned that consuming processed meats like bacon, sausages, hot dogs, ham, salami, and pepperoni leads to developing colorectal cancer. The report even mentioned consuming red meat also increases the risk of getting cancer.
IARC has classified processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogen (To be published in Volume 114 of IARC monograph for carcinogenic agents) along with potent carcinogen like tobacco, asbestos, X-ray, Gamma radiation etc. Though, WHO has made it clear that the level of threat from the different carcinogen lying in the same group might not be similar.
