The novel strain of coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, which has caused the COVID-19 pandemic, has been creating panic and fear because of its unknown properties. Zhao et al. conducted a retrospective study including 2173 patients confirmed with COVID-19 from 2 hospitals in Wuhan and 1 in Shenzhen, China. The objectives of the study were to ascertain whether the COVID-19 infection has any association with different blood types.

The research team collected ABO-type blood samples from SARS-CoV 2 infected patients, both alive and dead, and compared with 3694 uninfected people from Wuhan and 23,386 from Shenzhen as controls. The blood group in 3694 uninfected control groups from Wuhan had 32.16% of A blood type, 24.90% B type, 9.10% AB and 33.84% O blood-type.
