WHO’s Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Surveillance System on Emerging Antimicrobial Resistance Reporting (GLASS-EAR) has requested information on the emergence of hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) sequence type (ST) 23 from 124 countries enrolled in their program. The hvKp ST23 strain is resistant to carbapenem antibiotics. Out of 124 countries, 43 responded to their request.

Among them, 16 countries (Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Japan, Oman, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Switzerland, Thailand, the UK, and Northern Ireland) detected the presence of hvKp in their country.
