World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that it would put an end to its practice of classifying trans people as “mentally ill”. The U.N.’s health agency describes the individuals with the term “gender incongruence”, whose gender identity is different from what they were assigned at the time of birth. The term would be moved from the chapter ‘mental health’ to the ‘sexual health’ within the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) manual. The WHO concluded that “ gender variant behavior and preferences alone are not a basis ” to diagnose mental health condition.
In 2019, the change in the classification would be presented to the World Health Assembly, WHO’s legislative body. The change would go into effect on 1 st Jan, 2022.
