Barricaid® is an implant which is a polymeric mesh designed to rest at the posterior intervertebral disc space. It is connected to a metal anchor that is attached to the vertebral body. The Barricaid implant is suggested for patients with higher risk of a new disc herniation, the return of sciatica and disc collapse. An FDA advisory panel was against recommending approval for Barricaid, an Intrinsic Therapeutics’ product.

There were concerns raised over the safety of the device, breakage rate and endplate lesions of unknown origin. What is your opinion on the implant? Do you think it has a higher benefit: risk ratio?
