During the reproductive life span, estrogen plays a protective role in women’s bone health, metabolic homeostasis, and cardiovascular health. However, the beneficial effects of estrogen reduce in menopausal women. Estrogen deficiency during menopause increases the remodeling of bones and loss of bone density, which in turn increases the risk of osteoporosis. In addition, postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus are at a higher risk of developing severe hypoglycemia, which further increases the risk of seizures, loss of consciousness, falls, coma, and even death.
