To commemorate  Karl Landsteiner, the first person to have discovered the ABO blood group in 1900, June 14th is observed as World Blood Donor Day to increase global awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products for transfusion. It is a way of supporting blood donor organizations, national blood transfusion services, and other non-governmental organizations in expanding their voluntary blood donor programs through national and local campaigns. Recent reports confirm that over one hundred million units of blood are donated every year worldwide.
