Hypertension is considered resistant when a patient does not respond well to aggressive medical treatment and is taking three different anti-hypertensive medications at their maximally tolerated doses. Lipoprotein(a) is present in blood and is responsible for carrying cholesterol, fats, and proteins. Its synthesis is determined by genes inherited from parents. The concentration of lipoprotein(a) does not change much during the lifetime in males, and in women, levels increase as the natural estrogen level declines with menopause.
