A recently published study, analyzed data of about 5,103 antimicrobial susceptibility tests (AST) results from ten hospitals in India. The study assessed the MDR associated mortality in India. The results showed the overall mortality rate of 13.1% and a significant relationship between MDR and mortality. 2-3 times higher mortality was noted in case of infections with MDR and extremely drug-resistant (XDR) such as XDR E. coli, XDR K. pneumoniae, and MDR A. baumannii.
The study concludes that the burden of MDR associated mortality is higher in India compared to high-income countries.
