Can we use Three Dimensional (3D) bioprinted skin as a graft alternative for the treatment of burn patients? In this article, we talk about current methods used to transplant skin grafts, and 3D bioprinted human skin and its application as a skin graft for treatment of burn victims. In India, nearly 70 lakh burn cases are reported annually, out of which at least 1.4 lakh people die of burn injuries. Survival of the burn patient is the priority, but a healed burn patient may be left with post-burn scars which are an inevitable part of the wound healing process.
Apart from the extreme pain caused, burnt skin and tissues can also cause infections and hence lead to further complications in the treatment of the patient.
