AYUSH practitioners who have so far been practicing modern medicine without restriction may now face up to three years in jail, a fine of ₹20,000, or both. This follows a recent high court judgment explicitly stating that such practitioners are prohibited from practicing modern medicine. The ruling applies to all AYUSH practitioners, including those holding BUMS, BAMS, BIMS, and BHMS degrees, who were previously engaged in modern medical practice.

The Delhi Medical Council (DMC) has published a newspaper notice reiterating the high court’s order. Citing the April 8, 2016 judgment, the DMC states that only those holding recognized medical qualifications listed in the First, Second, or Third Schedule of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956, and registered with the DMC, are authorized to practice allopathy in the NCT of Delhi.
