Discovery of vaccines is one of the great accomplishments of humanity and it was made possible by enduring personal commitments of some of the remarkable individuals as well as by the encouragement and dedication of the general public. Two great figures stand tall in the history of development of vaccines. One is Louis Pasteur and the other is Jonas Salk.

The former made a series of discoveries, developed rabies vaccine, devised pasteurization technique to kill germs and microbes in the food chain, advanced germ theory, rescued the French wine and silk industry, and he is considered the father of microbiology for his immense contribution for the development of this particular discipline of biology.
