There is a plan going on for bringing medical teachers at par with other subjects by asking them to complete their PhD compulsorily to attain the status of associate professor as is in vogue for other teachers. They say MD is only a PG degree and an Associate Professor and Professor should be a PhD in the subject. How logical is that? A doctor is not a Doctor because he treats, but because he is a Doctor of Medicine. Doctor means teacher, not a physician.
