A new report in Obstetrics & Gynecology highlights the potential of extended-release buprenorphine as a safer, simpler option for managing opioid use disorder (OUD) during pregnancy and postpartum . In 15 women treated with the monthly injectable formulation , challenges like nausea, multiple daily dosing, and persistent cravings linked to sublingual therapy were successfully overcome. All participants achieved full adherence, stopped nonprescribed opioid use, and showed reduced overall substance use—with no maternal or neonatal side effects reported.
