The discovery of new SARS-CoV-2 mutations has raised several questions on the efficacy of the available vaccines. As a result, experts have said that effective antivirals are urgently needed to protect people from SARS-CoV-2 infection. Researchers have recommended that a combination of antivirals can be used against SARS-CoV-2, similar to the HIV-1 combination therapy. Acriflavine (ACF)  is an efficient inhibitor of SARS-CoV-2, according to a recent study published in the journal Cell Chemical Biology.

The drug is a combination of trypaflavines (3,6-diamino-10-methylacridinium chloride and 3,6-diamino-3-methylacridinium chloride) and proflavine (3,6-diaminoacridine) .
