Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are among the most common infections and almost 50% of the population gets affected by UTIs at least once in their lifetime. Current methods to detect the pathogens responsible for UTIs take about 2-3 days which makes the treatment difficult. Hence, there is a need of newer and faster diagnostic techniques for effective management of UTIs. This article gives an overview of current advances being done towards faster diagnosis of UTIs.
UTIs are mainly caused by Gram-negative pathogens, like Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae , and Enterobacter species. Patients with diabetes or with indwelling catheters can also develop fungal infections, however, fungal infections are not as common as bacterial infections. Urine culture methods to identify pathogens takes about 2-3 days and till then patient is prescribed with empirical antibiotics.…
