A team of surgeons at the Mafraq Hospital, Abu Dhabi performed a 12-hour-long surgery on a domestic worker to save her from paralysis caused by a rare spinal infection. The patient was suffering from a rare form of bone tuberculosis that affected her spines and led to the loss of sensation in her arms and legs. To save the patient from paralysis, doctors performed two surgeries on three consecutive vertebrae and replaced them with metallic discs and artificial bone.

Following surgery, the present case became the first of its kind in the UAE where three consecutive vertebrae were removed and replaced. Currently, the patient is recovering well and has been advised to undergo physiotherapy. Source: The National
