As per the statistics issued by the United Nations Inter-Agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UNIGME), India is at the highest as far as infant deaths are concerned. For all infants that are born, the first month is the most vital part of their life. In 2017, around 2.5 million newborns died in their first month. On an average, three infants die every two minutes in India due to lack of access to vital resources. More surprisingly, infant deaths in India are reported to be the highest in the world.

While this may be a sad news for Indian healthcare professionals, there is also another side to the story. In India, the number of infant deaths has declined from 8.67 lakh to 8.02 lakh from 2016 to 2017. Also, infant deaths in 2017, were reported to be the lowest since the 5 years.
