Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) or NMO spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, affecting the optic nerves and spinal cord. It is characterized by optic neuritis, transverse myelitis, numbness, loss of bladder and bowel control, severe nausea, and vomiting. In this disease, the abnormal autoantibodies bind to a protein and activate other parts of the immune system resulting in inflammation and cell damage.
