A 38-year- old woman is referred from the haematologist, with anaemia. She had been complaining of increasing episodes of tiredness and shortness of breath for 3 months, along with frequent headaches. Her periods occur every 24 days and the first day is usually moderate, but the consequent 4 days are very heavy. She uses tampons and sanitary towels together. She experiences no pain. Patient History: She did a Smear Test 2 years ago, which was normal.
She has no previous gynaecological problems and takes no medication. Physical Examination: The woman is slim with pale conjunctivae. Abdominal, bimanual and speculum examinations are unremarkable. Diagnostic Evaluation: Haemoglobin: 6.3 g/dL; MCV, WBC and Platelet count WNL; Ferritin: 9 µg/ml; Iron: 7 µmol/L; Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC): 80 µmol/L.
