Genitourinary tract infections pose a significant risk of morbidity, especially in the older adults. Hence, a proper regimen of antibiotics has immense importance. The present antibiotic guideline is taken from NHS foundation.
1- UNCOMPLICATED LOWER UTI Regimen: Nitrofurantoin 50mg (oral) every 6 hours for 3-7 days. Alternative regimen: Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid combination (co-amoxiclav) 375mg (oral) every 8 hours for 3-7 days OR Cefalexin 500mg (oral) 12 hourly for 3-7 days for patients eGFR < 60ml/min 2- COMPLICATED UTI/ PYELONEPHRITIS Regimen: Co-amoxiclav 625mg (oral) or 1.2g (IV) every 8 hours + Gentamicin 7mg/kg/day (IV) for 7-14 days (Include Gentamicin if MDR organism is a concern) Alternative regimen: Trimethoprim 200mg (oral) every 12 hours for 10 days 3- SEVERE SEPSIS ASSOCIATED WITH UTI Regimen: Piperacillin/Tazobactam combination 4.5g (IV) every 8 hours + Gentamicin…
