Could a mixed reality headset become part of the operating room? A new preliminary study suggests that Apple's Vision Pro may do more than showcase immersive technology. It could also improve surgical workflow and surgeon comfort during certain endoscopic procedures. Researchers evaluated the Apple Vision Pro as the primary display during endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy, a procedure performed to treat nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
The study compared 16 surgeries performed using the headset with 16 similar procedures using a conventional monitor. The results were encouraging. Procedures performed with the headset were completed about 8 minutes faster on average than those performed using a conventional monitor (34.4 vs 42.7 minutes), representing a roughly 19% reduction in operative time.
