In India, unintentional falls are a major public health problem that disproportionately affects older people and children. Falls accounted for 25% of all deaths from unintentional deaths and were the second major cause of such deaths. An estimated 1,60,000 fall-related deaths occurred in India in 2005, out of which nearly 20,000 were in children aged 0-14. People aged 70 years or older had the highest mortality rate from unintentional falls.

This evidence-based guidance gives appropriate interventions to be considered after the substantial risks of falls are identified. The conclusions from the assessment are as under. An increased risk of falls is established among persons with diagnoses of stroke, dementia, disorders of gait and balance, and those who use assistive devices to ambulate.
