Many life-threatening sequelae have been reported in the wake of severe COVID-19 infection, one of which is the induction of a prothrombotic state. However, the long-term effects of COVID-19 on the incidence of vascular diseases are not well understood. A cohort study involving 48 million adults in England and Wales compared the incidences of vascular events in people with and without COVID-19 infection. A higher incidence of arterial and venous thromboses was observed in patients with COVID-19, which declined over time from COVID-19 diagnosis.
The incidence of vascular events was higher in hospitalized than non-hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Approximately 10,500 arterial thromboses and venous thromboembolism were observed after 1.4 million diagnoses. These findings reinforce the importance of prophylactic measures like COVID-19 vaccines and advocate for early review after discharge,โฆ
