A randomized pilot Study revealed long-Term Suppression of Atrial Fibrillation (AF) by Botulinum Toxin Injection into epicardial fat pads in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Even a one-year follow-up of the patients showed a great success in abolishing AF. Botulinum toxin is produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. When a small amount of botulinum toxin is injected into a muscle, it blocks nerve impulse that signals muscles contraction.

Use of botulinum toxin is majorly limited to cosmetic application like reducing facial wrinkles and in some neurological application.
