Burnout is a state of physical exertion and mental exhaustion related to work. Studies show that stress is an integral part of all medical students and a leading cause of depression and suicidal ideation. Moreover, the evidence suggest that medical student burnout is prevalent than expected. A variety of personal and professional characteristics correlate well with burnout. To address this highly prevalent condition, mentors and educators in medical institutions must first develop greater awareness and understanding of burnout, as well as of the factors that lead to its development. Several studies highly recommend such interventions focusing on generating wellness among students during medical training.
