Researchers from the Harvard Medical School had previously demonstrated the effectiveness of the Bacillus Calmette-GuΓ©rin (BCG) vaccine in reducing HbA1c levels in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients. 1 Now, the same team has examined whether BCG can reduce HbA1c levels in bladder cancer patients with T1DM (n = 19) or T2DM (n = 106). 2 BCG therapy reduced HbA1c levels by nearly 10% in bladder cancer patients with T1DM within one year, three years, and six years, according to three different databases in the USA.
No reduction in HbA1c levels was found in bladder cancer patients with T2DM . By analyzing data from Diabetes UK, researchers also found that T1DM prevalence was low in countries with strict BCG vaccination programs for infants. The study suggested that metformin might block the activity of the BCG vaccine on glycolysis pathways and prevent the reduction of HbA1c levels.β¦
