A meta-analysis of five studies provides insights into the effect of estrogen, progesterone, and combined HT on GERD . The analysis showed a significant direct association between estrogen use and GERD (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.41) and progestogen use and GERD (two studies: aOR, 1.39). The use of combined HT was associated with a lower risk of GERD (aOR, 1.16) than either hormone alone .
Overall, HT use was found to increase the odds of GERD by 29% (aOR, 1.29). Despite witnessing a significant association between ever or current HT use and GERD, researchers recommend caution in interpreting these findings because of the small number of studies involved and heterogeneity in patients, study designs, and outcome assessments.
