Well, let’s go back to history, about a hundred years ago Pennsylvanian surgeon Evan Kane (first person to perform an appendicectomy in 1920) wrote a brief letter to JAMA (The Journal of the American Medical Association) advocating the usage of the phonograph in OT. He was known for using phonograph music as a distraction for patients in operation theatre. But in today’s world, we have a lot in our anesthetic armamentarium so patient distraction may not be needed.
Interestingly, a report indicated that 80% of the operation theatre staff believe that music is helpful in increasing team communication and in improving efficiency. Do you think that music can bring a calming effect to the operating team and surgical patient in operation theatre?
